Ο ρόλος του πολιτισμού στη δημιουργία νέων αφηγήσεων που βασίζονται στις έννοιες της ισότητας, της φιλοξενίας, της αλληλεγγύης και της κατανόησης είναι πιο επείγον από ποτέ. Για το λόγο αυτό, η State of Concept αποφάσισε να εγκαινιάσει ένα νέο κεφάλαιο στο πρόγραμμά της με τίτλο "Xen(i)os", το οποίο ασχολείται με τις προβληματικές του διπόλου οικοδεσπότη-φιλοξενούμενου, σε έναν κόσμο που γίνεται ολοένα και πιο ξενοφοβικός. Ασχολείται επιπλέον με τις ιστορίες της φιλοξενίας και της φροντίδας, σε σχέση με τις πολυπολιτισμικές πολιτικές που έχουν ορίσει τη μοντέρνα Δύση. Ο τίτλος είναι ένα παιχνίδι μεταξύ των λέξεων «Ξένιος» και «ξένος». Στο πλαίσιο αυτό, θα εξετάσουμε την διαφορετικότητα από μια φεμινιστική διαθεματική οπτική τόσο σε εθνικό όσο και σε διεθνές πλαίσιο. Καθώς η Ελλάδα προσδιορίζεται ως μέρος του αποκαλούμενου ως "παγκόσμιου νότου", θα αναζητήσουμε συνέργειες μεταξύ γεωγραφικών περιοχών του "Νότου" που διερευνούν φεμινιστικές πρακτικές φιλοξενίας, αλληλεγγύης και φροντίδας. Κομμάτι αυτού του κεφαλαίου είναι ένα νέο πρόγραμμα προβολών με τίτλο Αραβικά Φεμινιστικά Φιλμ, υπό την επιμέλεια της Doreen Toutikian.
Από το 2011 με την αυγή των αραβικών εξεγέρσεων, πολλές γυναίκες εικαστικοί και documentary σκηνοθέτιδες δείχνουν στον κόσμο τους κοινωνικούς και πολιτικούς αγώνες των λαών του Αραβικού κόσμου, μέσα από μια φεμινιστική ματιά. Το πρόγραμμα των Αραβικών Φεμινιστικών Φίλμ είναι ένα αφιέρωμα σε μια ανθολογία έργων που έχουν δημιουργήσει γυναίκες από την Παλαιστίνη, τη Συρία, την Αίγυπτο, τον Λίβανο, την Τυνησία, τη Σαουδική Αραβία και τη Λιβύη, οι οποίες έχουν αποκαλύψει διάφορες πτυχές -συχνά ταμπού για την τοπική κοινωνία- που κυριαρχούν στις ζωές των γυναικών του Αραβικού κόσμου.
Το πρόγραμμα αποτελείται από μια σειρά ταινιών, τα οποία εμπίπτουν σε τέσσερις διαφορετικές κατηγορίες: Αντίσταση, Χειραφέτηση, Έμφυλη Βία και Ηχώ του Πολέμου.
Ως μορφές Αντίστασης, η Feriel Ben Mahmoud με το ‘Feminism Inshallah: A History of Arab feminism’ κάνει μια επισκόπηση των πολιτικών κινημάτων της περιοχής που έχουν αλλάξει σε μεγάλο βαθμό τα δικαιώματα των γυναικών τις τελευταίες πέντε δεκαετίες. Η καλλιτέχνης από το Λίβανο Marwa Arsanios εξερευνεί τη φιγούρα μίας Αλγερινής μαχήτριας για την ελευθερία, της Jamila Bouhired στην ταινία του Gillo Pontecorvo του 1966, “The Battle of Algiers”. Το ‘The Trace of the Butterfly’ της Amal Ramsis ακολουθεί την ιστορία των διαδηλωτριών στην πλατεία Tahrir κατά τη διάρκεια των εξεγέρσεων, ενώ το “Forbidden” αποδίδει τη βίαιη πραγματικότητα του αιγυπτιακού κρατικού ελέγχου ορίζοντας όλα όσα δια νόμου απαγορεύονται να κάνουν οι άνθρωποι, από τη συμμετοχή των γυναικών στα κοινά μέχρι το να κρατιούνται δημοσίως από το χέρι με τους αγαπημένους τους. Ειδική αναφορά γίνεται στο τολμηρό ντοκιμαντέρ ‘Women of Hamas’ της Suha Arraf, το οποίο δείχνει για πρώτη φορά την ιδιωτική ζωή και τους αγώνες των συζύγων και μητέρων των μαρτύρων της Χαμάς.
Στο πλαίσιο της Χειραφέτησης, η Amber Fares παρακολουθεί την πρώτη γυναικεία ομάδα οδηγών ράλι στη Μέση Ανατολή, οι οποίες διαγωνίζονται δίπλα στους άνδρες ανταγωνιστές τους στους δρόμους της Παλαιστίνης. Το ‘Queens of Syria’ της Yasmine Fedda ακολουθεί το ταξίδι εξήντα γυναικών από τη Συρία, που εξορίσθηκαν στην Ιορδανία, οι οποίες συναντήθηκαν για να δημιουργήσουν και να αναπαραστήσουν τη δική τους εκδοχή της αρχαίας ελληνικής τραγωδίας “Τρωάδες”.
Στη σειρά Έμφυλη Βία, η ταινία “Women of Freedom” της Abeer Zeibak Haddad αποτελεί μία μαρτυρία για τα εγκλήματα τιμής στην Παλαιστίνη.
Η τελευταία κατηγορία: Ηχώ του Πολέμου
Η Mary Jirmanus Saba παρουσιάζει τη λήξη του προγράμματος με τη νέα της ταινία “A Feeling Greater than Love” που ανοίγει ξανά τις πληγές του εμφύλιου πολέμου του Λιβάνου και καταγράφει έναν επείγοντα προβληματισμό για το πώς να αποφύγουμε τα λάθη του παρελθόντος.
Η νεοεμφανιζόμενη Tyma Hezam από τη Σαουδική Αραβία κάνει ένα ντεμπούτο με την ταινία της ‘Here You Are’, ένα πειραματικό βίντεο-ποίημα που συνδυάζει το τοπίο, με το κείμενο και τη μουσική για να ρίξει φως στα θέματα ψυχικής υγείας και το μετατραυματικό στρες που βιώνουν οι πρόσφυγες μετά την άφιξή τους στον προορισμό τους. Η Παλαιστίνια εικαστικός Basma Al Sharif αποτίει ένα φόρο τιμής στη Λωρίδα της Γάζας και στην πιθανότητα της ελπίδας που βασίζεται στην αιώνια επιστροφή, ακολουθώντας έναν άνθρωπο μέσα από πέντε διαφορετικά τοπία ως αναπαράσταση του τραύματος στην ταινία της “Ourobouros".

Η Doreen Toutikian είναι cultural entrepreneur, επιμελήτρια, ερευνήτρια, εκπαιδευτικός και σύμβουλος. Είναι συνιδρύτρια του LOOP, ενός οργανισμού με έδρα την Αθήνα που προωθεί τη διαφορετικότητα στο design και στον πολιτισμό. Είναι επίσης ιδρύτρια και πρώην εκτελεστική διευθύντρια του Beirut Design Week, καθώς και ιδρύτρια και πρόεδρος του MENA Design Research Center. Είναι υπεύθυνη των διεθνών συνεργασιών για το ντοκιμαντέρ και την κινούμενη εικόνα στο State of Concept, όπου και επιμελείται του προγράμματος των Αραβικών Φεμινιστικών Φίλμ. Arab Feminist Films

The role of culture in creating new narratives that are based in concepts of equality, hospitality, solidarity and understanding, is now more urgent than ever. For this reason, State of Concept has decided to inaugurate a new programming chapter entitled “Xen(i)os” addressing the problematics between the binary of guest-host, in a world that is becoming all the more xenophobic. It is further addressing the histories of hospitality, care and hosting, in relationship to the multicultural policies that have defined the modern West. The title derives from the concept of “Xenios Zeus” the hospitable god Zeus, but also from the concept of “xenos” (l’etranger, the stranger). We will be looking at otherness from a feminist intersectional perspective, stemming from both the local and the global. As Greece is defined as a place of the “global south” we will be looking for South to South synergies that look into feminist forms of practice of hospitality, solidarity and care. One of the iterations of this trajectory is a new screening program entitled Arab Feminist Films, curated and organised by Doreen Toutikian.
Since 2011 with the dawn of Arab uprisings, many artists and documentary filmmakers took the opportunity to tell the world about the social and political struggles that peoples of the Arab region have been enduring, through the lens of feminist artists and directors. The Arab Feminist Films program is a tribute to an anthology of work produced by women from Palestine, Syria, Egypt, Lebanon, Tunisia,Saudi Arabia and Libya who have uncovered various aspects -often taboo ones in the local context- that have dominated the lives of Arab women and societies at large.
The program is comprised of a series of documentaries and contemporary art works in the form of film, that fall under four different categories: Resistance, Empowerment, Gender-Based Violence, and Echoes of War.
As forms of Resistance, Feriel Ben Mahmoud’s ‘Feminism Inshallah: A History of Arab feminism’ describes an overview of political movements in the region that have vastly changed the rights of women over the past 5 decades. Lebanese artist Marwa Arsanios brings forth her exploration of an Algerian freedom fighter, Jamila Bouhired in Gillo Pontecorvo’s 1966 film, The Battle of Algiers. Amal Ramsis’ ‘The Trace of the Butterfly’ follows the story of female protesters in Tahrir Square during the uprisings; while ‘Forbidden’ delivers a brutal reality on Egyptian state control defining everything that people are forbidden to do by law, ranging from the participation of women in the community to holding hands with loved ones in public. Special mention goes to Suha Arraf’s daring documentary film ‘Women of Hamas’, which for the first time shows the private lives and struggles of wives and mothers of Hamas martyrs.
Within the Empowerment sessions, Amber Fares tracks down the first all-women race car driving team in the Middle East who ride alongside their male competitors in the streets of Palestine. Yasmine Fedda’s ‘Queens of Syria’ follows the journey of sixty women from Syria, all forced into exile in Jordan, who came together to create and perform their own version of the Trojan Women, the Ancient Greek tragedy.
In the Gender-Based Violence series, Abeer Zeibak Haddad bears witness to honor killings in Palestine with her film ‘Women of Freedom’.
In the category Echoes of War, Mary Jirmanus Saba presents her new film ‘A Feeling Greater than Love’ that reopens the wounds of the Lebanese civil war and documents an urgent reflection on how to avoid the errors of the past.
Newcomer Saudi Arabian Tyma Hezam makes a debut with her film ‘Here You Are’, an experimental video-poem that blends landscape, text and music to shed light on mental health issues of the post-traumatic stress experienced by refugees upon their arrival to their destination. Palestinian visual artist Basma Al Sharif takes us on an homage to the Gaza Strip and to the possibility of hope based on the eternal return by following a man through five different landscapes as representation of trauma in her film Ourobouros.
The Arab Feminist Films program is a collaboration between LOOP and State of Concept that hopes to become a staple event in the cultural scene of Athens.

Doreen Toutikian is a cultural entrepreneur, curator, researcher, educator, and consultant. She is currently co-founder of LOOP, an organization based in Athens that promotes diversity in arts and culture. She is also founder and former executive director of Beirut Design Week, as well as founder & President of MENA Design Research Center. She is responsible for international collaborations for documentary and moving image at State of Concept, where she is curator of the Arab Feminist Films program. Doreen also lectures an MA courses on design research and theory at Academie Libanaise des Beaux Arts, where she is also a member of the pedagogical committee.. She is based between Athens and Beirut.
