Le 21 septembre 2017 fut inaugurée au BIEL (Beirut International Exhibition and Leisure Center) à Beyrouth la huitième édition de la foire internationale pour l’art contemporain de la capitale libanaise : la Beirut Art Fair, clôturée le 24 septembre. Durant quatre jours, des galeries du monde entier sont venues exposer leurs artistes. Suite au succès rencontré avec l’édition 2016, l’édition 2017 de la foire a composé un programme ambitieux et innovant, témoignant par les rencontres envisagées de la place grandissante que prend Beyrouth sur la scène internationale pour la création contemporaine et le marché de l’art.

Historique de la Beirut Art Fair

Beyrouth inaugure sa première foire d’art contemporain en 2010. Internationale, elle est toutefois spécifiquement dédiée à l’art de la région ME.NA.SA (Middle East, North Africa, South-East Asia), première du genre s’imposant par son audace et son ambition. C’est de cet acronyme que la foire tire sa première appellation : « Menasart ». L’événement est mené par Laure d’Hauteville et avait pour objectif de « répondre à une demande grandissante de la part des collectionneurs du monde entier qui souhaitent mieux connaître les talents de la région ; s’adresser plus particulièrement aux grands collectionneurs de la région ; attirer l’attention des médias internationaux sur ce marché émergeant » (1). À cette époque déjà, le potentiel du marché régional de l’art apparaissait à cette femme d’affaire de l’art contemporain fortement intéressant : en 2010, le marché notait - notamment grâce à la création en 2006 la foire internationale d’art contemporain « Art Dubai » à Dubai (2) - une augmentation de 600% en quatre ans (3).
La Menasart rassemble rapidement des dizaines de galeries et des centaines d’artistes autour d’un événement qui se révèle rapidement attractif en raison notamment de son positionnement géographique original et de son caractère « hybride, commercial et culturel, qui témoigne de l’extraordinaire dynamisme culturel et artistique de la région » (4), et qui apparaît pour les critiques comme une autre matérialisation de la passerelle que représente Beyrouth entre l’Orient et l’Occident. L’événement est rebaptisé en 2012 « Beirut Art Fair » et n’a cessé de croître : en 2015, son chiffre d’affaire atteint 3,2 millions de dollars, c’est-à-dire quatre fois plus que lors de sa première édition (5). La direction artistique commence dès 2016 à sélectionner davantage les galeries qui répondent plus spécifiquement à la problématique construite par l’événement, et organise au sein de la foire des expositions thématiques.

Beirut Art Fair 2017

L’édition 2017 de la foire libanaise, titrée « Orient your mind ! », a choisi de mettre l’accent sur la création libanaise (6). Comme l’année précédente, les galeries ont été sélectionnées en fonction de leur orientation et de leur cohérence vis-à-vis de la problématique de la foire, afin de répondre au plus près des attentes des collectionneurs (7). Les collections libanaises, placées au cœur de l’événement, furent déterminées par la curatrice Rose Issa, à qui fut donnée la charge d’organiser l’exposition « Ourouba, the Eye of Lebanon » qui, à partir d’un texte de Georges Corm, tentait d’interroger l’histoire complexe du concept d’« arabicité ». Y sont ainsi présentées des œuvres de Ziad Antar (« Cote d’Azure from the Beirut Bereft series », 2007), de Kader Attia (« Black Cube I », 2006), d’Abdul Rahman Katanani (« Wave », 2016) ou de Mona Hatoum (« Kapancik », 2012).
Une seconde exposition, programmée par Nelly Choucair Zeidan et répondant au titre « Food Art by Bankmed, Lemons and Rainbows », avait pour objectif de révéler la dimension artistique de la nourriture, autour d’une réflexion sur le juteux, centrée sur le motif du citron, fruit méditerranéen par excellence. On y retrouvait les œuvres de Lina Samma, de Raffi Tokaltian et de Hala Audi Bayoun.
En regard de ces expositions, un espace était dédié au travail d’illustration du Prophète de Gibran Khalil Gibran que Rachid Koraïchi réalisait en 1923. En sus de ces expositions, visites guidées, ateliers (Aurélie Pétrel, atelier de photographie avec Yara Bsaibes et Joe Ghanem autour du thème « Le geste et sa construction »), table ronde (« Désorientation politique - réorientation artistique ») et performance artistique (Maria Gimeno, Equilibro) furent mises en place.
Des galeries de tout le monde arabe furent représentées. Parmi les œuvres exposées, beaucoup tentent de questionner la société, les artistes dénonçant particulièrement la situation politique et sociale des pays dans lesquels ils évoluent. Le peintre et sculpteur libanais Charbel Samuel Aoun, représenté par la galerie libanaise Mark Hachem, présente « Dark Matter » (2016), une œuvre peinte heurtée par l’incrustation d’éléments de ciment, de bois et de ferraille qui, en représentant une ville plongée dans le noir, évoque la souffrance, l’impasse, la destruction - métaphore évidente de la violence déployée dans la région. L’artiste syrien Saad Yagan, représenté par la galerie syrienne Kozah Art Gallery, présente quant à lui comme réaction à la guerre une icône rappelant les traditionnelles déplorations sur le Christ mort (« Motherhood », 2017) où l’on voit placées verticalement, comme un totem, des figures éplorées de femmes voilées de noir et d’hommes aux crânes bandés de pansements, rassemblées autour d’un corps sans vie, éclatant de blancheur et de nudité. Certaines œuvres d’artistes connus du grand public étaient également visibles. Mounir Fatmi, représenté par la galerie suisse Anali Forever, exposait ainsi sa série « The Island of Roots » (2017) dans laquelle il reprend les fiches d’identités établies à Ellis Island dans les années 1920 pour discuter des questionnements contemporains sur l’immigration.
Dans une section intitulée « Revealing », créée en 2016 pour « mettre en lumière et faciliter la découverte des meilleurs jeunes talents » (8), exposaient des artistes comme la Marocaine Majida Khattari, représentée par la galerie française Dominique Fiat, et dont l’œuvre « Vidar » (2017) discute à travers des motifs orientalistes les rapports entretenus sur les femmes entre la France et le Maroc, ou l’Égyptien Mohamed Monassier, représenté par la galerie égyptienne Mashrabia Gallery of Contemporary Art, qui reprend dans Dictionary (2014) la technique ancestrale de la peinture sur papyrus pour questionner la fascination des hommes pour les choses anciennes.
En complément furent exposés les œuvres ayant remporté des prix décernés par la grande banque partenaire Byblos Bank, et plusieurs films furent projetés à l’occasion d’une Beirut Art Week. Cette année se tint aux côtés de la Beirut Art Fair la première édition Beirut Design Fair, qui fut organisée également au BIEL, du 19 au 23 septembre.

Une rentrée de l’art contemporain qui déborde la Beirut Art Fair

Les galeries et les expositions d’art contemporain abondent au Liban. Les initiatives publiques restent rares, mais les mécènes sont de plus en plus généreux avec les projets avant-gardistes de galerie d’art contemporain. Après le Beirut Art Center (9) de Marie Muracciole, fondé en 2009 et qui défend l’aspect expérimental de l’art, la fondation libanaise pour les arts plastiques Ashkal Alwan (10), cofondée par Christine Thomé en 2011, ou encore la fondation Aïshti de Tony Salamé qui, au contraire, favorise le caractère luxueux du marché de l’art, les petites galeries se sont multipliées, avec des concepts de plus en plus hybrides. L’espace urbain KED, situé près de la rivière de Beyrouth, inaugurait ainsi à la veille de la Beirut Art Fair une exposition intitulée « Looking for the Present Motion ». Ce lieu est une illustration intéressante de l’intérêt porté par les entrepreneurs privés de Beyrouth à l’art contemporain : offrant la journée un espace à de jeunes artistes libanais contemporains, il se transforme la nuit en un lieu de fête. Si la multifonctionnalité du lieu sert l’économie, l’exposition présentée dernièrement demeure très intéressante et représentative des expérimentations des jeunes artistes libanais. La peinture expérimentale de Rami Chahine (11), jaillissement de couleurs né d’un processus de transfert aléatoire de la peinture sur la toile, occupe la majorité de l’espace. Les toiles se déploient, laissant au spectateur l’opportunité de développer au contact de ces œuvres nées du hasard sa propre imagination, et côtoient la performance sur vidéo projetée de la danseuse Ahlam Dirani qui pratique, dans une vallée libanaise vouée à disparaître sous les projets d’infrastructures à Jannit Qartaba, la danse japonaise du Jinen Butoh. Cet espace est habité par l’installation sonore interactive de l’artiste Mme Chandelier, qui réagit aux paroles que le public jette dans le micro. Installation complexe à la pointe du tourbillon des tentatives expérimentales dans lequel la création libanaise se trouve emportée.
Les musées sont eux aussi pour la plupart privés. Sur les hauteurs de Byblos, le musée d’art moderne et contemporain MACAM (12) fondé en 2015 organisait cette année la première Biennale d’Art Contemporain organisée au Liban à partir d’une compétition d’art contemporain lancée par l’association libanaise Cultural Resistance (13). Réunissant 45 artistes issus de 24 pays, cet événement fut inauguré le 16 septembre 2017 et se poursuivra jusqu’à la fin du mois de décembre. Cet événement est également significatif de l’implication du Liban sur la scène artistique contemporaine internationale : des œuvres plastiques côtoient des films et des installations mix-médias, et un jury international décernera un prix à une œuvre particulière qui devra répondre au thème de l’exposition : la rupture dans la représentation. Cette première Biennale appelle une tenue régulière de ce nouvel événement, qui devrait prendre une place de plus en plus importante sur le calendrier des rendez-vous artistiques libanais.
Ce bref panorama des événements de septembre permet de constater la croissance du marché de l’art contemporain au Liban, qui s’impose désormais de plus en plus comme un rendez-vous des professionnels et du public libanais et international face aux événements déjà incontournables organisés dans la région du Golfe voisin.
