ONLINE: Live Talk: "Unseen Question? Zionism and
the Palestinians under the British Mandate", Balfour Project, 8 October
2020, 3:00 pm, GMT
This talk is
by Ian Black, Middle East Centre, LSE. From the early days of Zionist
settlement in Palestine it was clear that the project faced opposition from the
native Arab majority. Hostility escalated with the start of British rule.
Zionist leaders admitted that a national confrontation was under way but
official public messaging was that Arabs would benefit from the Jewish economic
development of the country. By the end of the Palestinian “great rebellion” of
1936-1939 that was exposed as an illusion.

For hundreds

Jerusalem is a sacred city. Being able to access freely its holy places is for
them of primordial importance. And, for Palestinians, East Jerusalem must be
the capital of their future state. Putting the city back on the table is the
purpose of this major conference. Inclusive, not exclusive, solutions will be
sought by a range of distinguished expert speakers.

University of London, 27 October 2020, 5:30 pm - 7.00 pm GMT
This talk is
by Jessica Ayesha Northey, Coventry University. On 22 February 2019, Algeria
saw the emergence of a peaceful movement for democracy. Known as the hirak,
weekly marches of millions led to President Bouteflika standing down. This
continued until 2020 and the global covid19 pandemic. How did Algerians take on
such a powerful regime, without violence, despite deep frustrations and a history
of violent political change?
