1. International Conference and Roundtable Discussion: "The First World War in the
Middle East: Experience, Knowledge, Memory", Beirut, 3-4 November 2014

100 years have passed since the outbreak of the First World War. This international
conference, organized by the Orient Institut Beirut (OIB), the Institut français du
Proche Orient (Ifpo), the History Department of the Université Saint-Jospeh (USJ)
and the Institute of Palestinian Studies (IPS), aims to question and rethink the
place of this conflict in the history of the Middle East.

2. International Conference: "Constitutional Experiences in the Middle East and
North Africa (from approx. 18th to 20th century)", Orient-Institut Beirut, 6-7
November 2014
 
Convenors: Stefan Leder and Astrid Meier. This conference aims at exploring concepts
and practices related to constitutional experiences prior and parallel to the
occurrence of written constitutions. Combining political, intellectual, legal and
social history across the region, the conference combines papers on legal and
organizational frameworks, administrative bodies, associations, councils,
corporative structures, customs, as well as discourses of rule, power and statehood
aimed at containing authority.

6. International Forum: "Food Fabrication. Culinary Practices and Food Politics in
the Arab World", Beirut, 15-17 January 2015

Jointly organized by the Orient-Institut Beirut and Goethe-Institut Beirut. The aim
of this forum is to take a comprehensive look at food in Lebanon and the Arab World
where food insecurity coexists with obesity; and where most of the food consumed is
imported. It aims to contribute to the contemporary debates surrounding food by
addressing pressing issues such as culinary practices, food globalization, food
safety and food security. The forum will bring together farmers and entrepreneurs,
activists, artists and politicians and academics in order to echo the voices
implicated in the debates over food. Participants will critically examine current
eating habits, cooking and dining cultures, food trends as well as the relation of
food and arts.

7. Middle East Dialogue 2015: "The Middle East: Glorious Past, Uncertain Future",
Washington DC, 26 February 2015 

The Middle East Dialogue is for policy makers, scholars, business and social
leaders, to discuss current issues. Its purpose is to promote multidisciplinary
conversation about topics that include, but are not limited to education
initiatives, social, economic and political reforms, nuclear proliferation,
interfaith dialogue, women's gains and challenges, peace initiatives, and potential
areas of conflict.

8. Conference: "International Statebuilding and Gender in the Middle East", London
School of Economics, 30 March 2015

This conference aims to look at the impact of the relationship between
international, national and local actors on the level of incorporation of gender in
the processes of statebuilding in the Middle East. This call invites paper proposals
 focusing on Iraqi Kurdistan and Iraq, as well as the rest of the Middle East and
North Africa region.

2015 
 
Papers are invited that relate to any aspect of Iranian studies in any discipline
within the humanities and social sciences. This includes but is by no means limited
to: ancient through to contemporary history and historiography; anthropology;
archaeology; cultural heritage and conservation; social and political theory;
Diaspora and area studies; ecology and the environment; economics; historical
geography etc.

Following the very successful inaugural conference of BRAIS at the University of
Edinburgh in April 2014, the organizers now invite proposals for whole panels or
individual papers on any aspect or sub-discipline of Islamic Studies which is
broadly understood, to include all aspects of the study of Islam and Muslims, past
and present, in both Muslim-majority and Muslim-minority contexts

11. Conference: "Among Empires: the British Empire in Global Imperial Context",
Lingnan University, Hong Kong: 27-29 May 2015

This conference will address the British Empire within the context of its relations
with rival empires—including those of other European imperial powers, the
“traditional” landbased empires of Asia and Africa, and emergent transnational or
multinational institutions or domains. All papers should focus on the British Empire
and at least one other “empire”— e.g., the Ottoman, Mughal, Safavid, etc.

12. Postgraduate Symposium: "Muslims in the UK and Europe", Centre of Islamic
Studies, University of Cambridge, 29-31 May 2015

The organizers invite applications from current Masters and PhD candidates to
present their research on issues pertaining to Muslims in the UK and Europe, from
any discipline. The symposium will be a platform for students to present and
exchange current research on any topic in this field in a dynamic forum.
Accommodation will be covered by the Centre of Islamic Studies and travel bursaries
will be available.
