The University Research Priority Program (URPP) Asia and Europe of the
University of Zurich explores exchanges and encounters between Asia
and Europe that have taken and continue to take place in the areas of
culture, law, religion and society. It promotes research by junior
graduate scholars at both doctoral and post-doctoral levels within a
structured and interdisciplinary research environment. The URPP
consists of three research fields, i.e. Concepts and Taxonomies,
Entangled Histories, and Norms and Social Order(s).

Applicants should submit an original research project related to the
following research projects:

1) Political Protest, Circulating Norms and the Political Economy of
Land in South Asia

This project looks into forms of protest against land grabbing and
land colonization in South Asia. We start from the premise that the
political economy of land in South Asia forms part of a specific mode
of governing through a state of exception, in which different forms of
property rights are contested and negotiated. The project will look
into the formation of transnational networks (forms of protest) and
the transnational circulation of norms, ideas and practices (between
Asia and Europe) that are mobilized to legitimate political protest
and uprising or, conversly, to justify territorial claims and related
political and even military interventions by state and non-state
actors alike.

2) Reconfiguring Citizenship in the Arab World

Recent developments in the Arab world have renewed academic interest
in types of contentious action and patterns of popular mobilization in
the region. Since the events of the so-called Arab spring, challenging
authoritarianism and opposing social inequalities in the name of
justice, dignity and liberty have been effective devices for
reclaiming political participation. The language of transnational
human rights and civil rights has been of utmost importance in this
context. However, current developments in several countries of the
region point not only to the force of resistance of certain groups and
centres of power, but also indicate the re-emergence of profound
ideological cleavages inside as well as outside the state apparatus.
What seems to be at stake is the relationship between subjects and the
state in terms of political belonging as well as in terms of access to
rights and resources. At the same time, the fact that mobilization has
been fostered by a multitude of communicational tools  ranging from
personal networks and established organizations to new social media
and from image politics to artistic forms of public expression  raises
questions as to the role of mediatization in political protest.
Focusing on the changing course of protest and conflict, the project
will be devoted to conflicting claims to citizenship and to the
contested character of its institutionalization.

Questions that could be addressed under this perspective are:

-        What is the role played by mediatization in shaping concepts
and practices of citizenship?

-        How is public space used by different actors for the
inclusion or exclusion of groups and their political demands?

-        What are the strategies employed by protesters and the
authorities to visualize political protest?

-        How is citizenship politically and legally re-configured?

According to the disciplinary background of the candidate and the
thematic focus of the proposal, the PhD project will be assigned to
legal studies or Islamic / Middle Eastern studies. Projects with a
focus on gender are especially encouraged.

Requirements: M.A. or equivalent academic degree qualifying the
candidate to submit a PhD thesis in one of the following disciplines:
Chinese studies, East Asian art history, Gender studies, general and
comparative literature, geography, history, Indian studies, Islamic
and Middle Eastern studies, Japanese studies, law, political science,
social and cultural anthropology, study of religion, theology.

Candidates are expected to enroll in the URPPs graduate program
(Interdisciplinary Doctoral Program Asia and Europe), where
discussions are conducted in German and/or English. Candidates should
therefore have adequate knowledge of German or be ready to acquire the
necessary language skills upon notice of election.

Employment conditions: 50% PhD-position at the University of Zurich
for the duration of three years at most. The salary is according to
the Universitys regulations for PhD-students. PhD dissertations are to
be submitted at the University of Zurich.

L’ivresse (sukr) est un état d’exaltation psychologique et d’excitation physique dû, dans la plupart des cas, à l’absorption d’une substance enivrante, telle que le vin ou diverses autres drogues, qui entraîne un état modifié de la conscience. L’étourdissement déclenche une attitude de désinvolture vis-à-vis de la morale commune ainsi qu’une perte momentanée de l’inhibition et de la maîtrise de soi-même (ḥilm). Les effets des enivrants ont étés souvent associés aux états d’extase et de suspension de la réalité, pendant lesquels le sujet expérimente des sensations qui n’ont pas d’égales dans la normalité et la sobriété (ṣaḥw) et il s’ouvre ainsi un espace de liberté intellectuelle et d’imagination semblable au rêve et à la folie.
Or, dans l’expérience poétique, la lecture simple ou répétée de certains poèmes ou textes peut aussi provoquer un état ou une succession d’états analogues au sukr, qui finissent par confondre une parole sur l’ivresse et souvent l’amour (‘ishq), qui en est rarement éloigné, avec l’ivresse elle-même et la réalisation de la relation amoureuse. En outre, le motif de l’ivresse est largement exploité dans la poésie d’éloge (madḥ) pour représenter la générosité de la personne célébrée.
Après les travaux pionniers de Wagner, Bencheikh, Rosenthal et Kennedy, et, si on s’ouvre à d’autres substances que le vin, les études très récentes sur les drogues dans l’Islam médiéval conduites par Indalecio Lozano Cámara, le sujet paraît aujourd’hui d’autant plus fascinant qu’il marque durablement l’Islam médiéval non seulement à l’époque classique mais tout autant et peut-être même plus ou, du moins, d’une manière plus diversifiée, l’époque post-classique où l’on verra s’imposer d’autres vecteurs de l’ivresse. Car, en dépit de l’alternance de périodes de grande ou faible tolérance, les substances enivrantes ont été largement produits et consommés dans le dār al-islām. Et si dans la qaṣīdah préislamique le motif du vin et de l’ivresse semblent encore peu fréquents, à partir de la période omeyyade tardive et puis surtout le califat abbasside, la ḫamriyyah va acquérir son statut de genre littéraire indépendamment du ġazal, à travers la codification d’un ensemble d’images et de clichés. Toutefois, le motif bachique, pour garder cet exemple, va conserver un dialogue serré avec la poésie érotique, en vertu des analogies existantes entre l’état d’ivresse et l’exaltation provoqué par l’amour et la passion. D’autre part, l’ensemble des images de la poésie bachique ainsi que du ġazal, sera largement exploité dans les compositions des mystiques soufis, qui ne se limiteront pas à remanier des clichés littéraires, mais seront même accusés de s’abandonner à tous les vices lors de leurs pratiques dévotionnelles, comme si l’exaltation mystique et la littérature qui s’en inspire devenait elle-même ivresse et débauche. Au début de l’époque post-abbaside, on voit apparaître cependant des représentations poétiques et littéraires de l’ivresse (anecdotes des Mille et une nuits sur les « mangeurs de haschisch ») provoquée par la consommation de substances autres que le vin qui ouvriront la voie à de nouvelles formes littéraires et, peut-être, à une nouvelle esthétique.
L’objectif de ce colloque est précisément d’examiner quelques uns des aspects de l’ivresse,
dans la littérature ou par la littérature, entre les périodes classique et postclassique, selon les axes
de réflexion qui suivent :
- Littérature de l’ivresse : comment la littérature de l’ivresse prend-elle place sur le plan
générique ? Peut-on identifier l’émergence ou le développement d’une telle thématique en
rapport avec un phénomène littéraire ou contextuel précis? Comment y associer, dans le
temps, la variation des substances enivrantes en jeu ?
- Ivresse de la littérature : étant donné que le sukr est une forme de « ravissement (ṭarab) qui
provoque un plaisir (laḏāḏah) sans intellect (ʻaql) », selon la formule d’Ibn Taymiyyah (m.
728/1328), peu susceptible de complaisance, quel est le rôle des autres facteurs tels que le
chant, la musique, la danse mais aussi la poésie et la littérature elle-même dans la
stimulation d’un état d’ivresse ? Quelles relations subsistent entre les représentations
littéraires de l’ivresse et le mysticisme, voire le droit islamique et la médicine, qui jouera un
rôle important ?
- Sur le plan méthodologique : jusqu’à quel point les compositions peuvent être considérées
comme des documents pour une analyse de l’histoire et de la société de l’époque ?
- Ouverture : quelle place occupe ces différentes problématiques dans des contextes non
arabes (persan, turc, berbère, Europe latine et médiévale, etc.) à l’époque pré-moderne ?

recherche et Jeunes chercheurs, sont priées d'envoyer le titre de leur communication accompagné

Inebriation (sukr) is the state of psychological exaltation and physical excitement provoked mostly by the ingestion of intoxicating substances such as wine or other drogues, which leads to a distortion of the state of consciousness. This dazing effect can trigger indifference towards morality, as well as a temporary loss of inhibition and self-control (ḥilm). The effects of intoxicants have often been associated with ecstasy and suspension of reality, during which the subject discovers sensations never felt in normal conditions of sobriety (ṣaḥw). Thus, he can open for himself a space of intellectual freedom and imagination, similar to that of dreams and madness.
Therefore, in the poetic experience, the simple reading or the repetition of some poems or texts can provoke a state or a succession of states similar to sukr, which might mistake a word on inebriation, and often love (‘ishq), which is normally not so distant from the first, for inebriation itself and the realisation of a love affair. Moreover, the inebriation motif is largely exploited in the madḥ poetry to represent the eulogized person’s generosity.
After the pioneering works of Wagner, Bencheikh, Rosenthal and Kennedy, and, if we include other substances than wine, the most recent researches on drogues in medieval Islam of Indalecio Lozano Cámara, this topic seems more fascinating today since it durably affects medieval Arabic studies not only in the classical period but especially in the post-classical period, when other vehicles of inebriation will emerge. Despite the series of more or less tolerant periods, intoxicants were widely produced and consumed in dār al-islām. In the pre-Islamic qaṣīdah wine and the inebriation pattern seem less frequently thematized, whereas from the late Omayyad period on and especially during the Abbasid caliphate, the ḫamriyyah will gain the status of a literary genre independent from ġazal, through the development of a series of images and literary clichés. However, the wine motif, to consider but one example, will maintain a close dialogue with the erotic poetry, by virtues of the existing analogies between the state of inebriation and the euphoria of love and passion. On the other hand, the whole set of images of wine poetry and ġazal will be widely exploited in the compositions of Sufis mystics, who, rewriting the literary clichés, will be blamed for indulging in vices during their religious exercises, as if literature itself became inebriation and debauchery. From the beginning of the post-Abbasid era, we assist to the emergence of poetic and literary representations of inebriation ( « hashish eaters » anecdotes of The Thousand and One Nights, for instance) as a result of the introduction of intoxicants other than wine, which possibly establish a new aesthetic.
The aim of this colloquium is to examine some aspects of inebriation in and by literature in the classical and post-classical periods. Suggested topics include, but are not limited to:
- Literature of inebriation : how does the literature of inebriation take place as genre? Is it possible to identify the emergence and the development of such a theme in relation to a
literary or a specific contextual phenomenon? How can we include the evolution in production and consumption of intoxicants in a broader historical frame?
- Inebriation by literature. According to Ibn Taymiyyah (m. 728/1328), sukr is a kind of « delight (ṭarab) which provokes a pleasure (laḏāḏah) without thinking (ʻaql) »: which role do other factors – such as singing, music and dance, as well as poetry and literature themselves – play in stimulating inebriation? Which are the connections between literary representations of inebriation and mysticism, Islamic law and medicine?
- Methodological questions: to what extent can these compositions be considered as documents for the analysis of the history and society of this period?
- Beyond the Arab world: which is the place of these issues in non-Arabic contexts (Persian, Turkish, Berber, Latin and Medieval Europe, etc.) in the pre-modern time?

Our present workshop (term 2012/13) concentrates on the revolutions of the “Arab Spring” and their (re-)presentation by the satellite channels. Based on considerations of revolutionary theories and the concepts of media/news framing we will strive to analyze and discuss two talkshows (al-Jazeera & al-‘Arabiyya) to the effect of how different channels with differing political agendas (re-)present, (re-)construct and construe the political upheavals in the MENA region in distinctive ways.

"Liwa" is a refereed academic journal dedicated to the study of the history, archeology and heritage of the United Arab Emirates and the Arabian Gulf Region.  This journal is published every June and December on the internet as well as in print form by the National Center for Documentation and Research in the United Arab Emirates. - Identité et altérité : l’exemple de la guerre juste chez Al-Fârâbî par Makram ABBAS.

 

 

Présentation

Ce séminaire se compose de deux volets : le premier sera littéraire et analysera à travers un corpus d’œuvres diversifiés le regard que porte la littérature arabe tout au long de son histoire sur sa société, avec en contrepoint les sociétés étrangères côtoyées. Ce regard souvent critique s'intéresse aussi bien aux structures sociales que familiales, ainsi qu'aux systèmes politiques. Il ne négligera pas pour autant la vision portée par la littérature arabe sur l’Autre et plus généralement l’Occident. Ce volet sera sous la responsabilité de Maher Al Munajjed, Gilles Ladkany et Marie-Thérèse Oliver-Saidi. (Le 2ème jeudi du mois de 15h à 17h)

Le deuxième volet placé sous la responsabilité de Rania Samara est un atelier de travail sur la traduction, les techniques d'apprentissage et l'acquisition des compétences spécifiques à cette activité. Il éclairera comment la traduction d’oeuvres majeures du patrimoine littéraire arabe -oeuvres classiques, modernes ou contemporaines peut contribuer à mieux faire connaître la civilisation du monde arabe et la manière dont il s'appréhende lui-même. (Le 4ème jeudi du mois de 15h à 17h). Les informations concernant ce volet paraitront mensuellement dans le bulletin de l’IISMM édité par Joëlle Gastambide (01.53.63.56.08 - joelle.gastambide@ehess.fr)

Ces deux volets sont donc complémentaires puisque l'effort de traduction conduit de l'arabe au français permet de mieux cerner cette réflexion critique des écrivains, préparant par-là les bouleversements actuels.

Argumentaire

Les auteurs arabes que ce soient des historiens, des voyageurs, des hommes de lettres ou des philosophes... ont toujours porté sur leur société un regard lucide, voire critique, étayé par la rencontre ou la confrontation avec d'autres sociétés étrangères et la connaissance que celles-ci ont induit, dans le rejet ou la fascination. La littérature dans ses divers genres, et notamment dans le roman moderne et contemporain, a su représenter les spécificités de ces sociétés arabes, leurs particularités régionales : relations entre groupes sociaux, confessionnels, tribaux, rôle du chef, clientélisme, relations familiales et conjugales, tabous culturels, sexuels ou religieux...

L'ouverture sur l'Autre a encouragé ce mouvement de réflexion sur soi, à savoir comment améliorer et moderniser les structures culturelles, sociales et politiques tout en préservant ses propres valeurs. Chaque œuvre nous apporte une part de Soi ou une part de l’Autre qui pourra être d’origine ethnique ou religieuse différente. Ce jugement porté sur l’autre se renouvellera lors de la période de la « Nahda / renaissance » où l’on tentera de puiser depuis « Tahtawi » un apport culturel et technique respectant l’Autre mais restant toujours attaché à son sentiment d’identité et de spécificité arabes. Le paradoxe réside en ce que ce mouvement envers l’Autre s’est constamment accompagné d’un intense travail d’échange, de symbiose et parfois même de métissage avec autrui de l’Andalousie à la Grèce, à la Perse et l’Inde. Le Moyen-Orient, le Maghreb et toute la Méditerranée furent le creuset de ces rencontres.    

Il nous appartiendra donc de démêler jusqu'à la période contemporaine l'écheveau d'une culture complexe où le rapport avec l'Autre, l'appréhension de sa culture peut jouer un rôle dynamique, stimulant le questionnement sur soi, offrant de nouvelles perspectives répercutées dans la création littéraire elle-même, dans ses thématiques comme dans ses inventions formelles. Pourront être étudiées les raisons politiques, religieuses ou langagières qui ont favorisé ou gêné tel genre littéraire dans tel pays, les motifs qui imposent telles images privilégiées, les innovations lancées par de nouvelles vagues d'écrivains.

Les littératures francophones du Maghreb comme du Machrek seront associées à ce travail d'analyse puisqu'elles proposent elles aussi un riche panorama de situations sociales et politiques, avec des points de vue et des prises de parole originaux. Le panel d’oeuvres qui devrait être ainsi présenté pourra témoigner des capacités de clairvoyance d'une littérature où l'imagination prend souvent appui sur une observation fine et perspicace du réel et de ses potentialités de transformation et de sursaut. La notion de l’échange peut s’appliquer aux littératures arabes, qui sont le produit de nombre de croisements, d’échanges interculturels mais qui ont toujours jalousement tenu à conserver leur singularité voire leur identité et leur pureté issues de la littérature classique et des textes sacrés que lui ont inspiré son sceau jusqu’à nos jours.

Bien entendu, notre objet de recherche sera avant tout les littératures arabes aussi bien classiques que contemporaines, des poètes préislamiques aux jeunes écrivains qui ont contribué aux révoltes arabes en quelque sorte, à l’image de la révolte de leurs maîtres des années 60-90.

University of Aberdeen Research Project Award Scheme: "Comparative Statecraft and Constitutional Thought" The University of Aberdeen provides funding for four innovative doctoral-level projects from high-calibre applicants on Comparative Statecraft and Constitutional Thought. Our understanding of legitimate governance in principle and practice has generally been studied through the lens of Western paradigms: the United Nations, the nation-state, the separation of church and state, the will of the people. Seeking to break this mould, the Project initiative will support contemporary and historical research from across the humanities and social sciences on the comparative study of indigenous understandings of legitimate governance. In particular, we are looking for research proposals on: (i) The development of indigenous constitutional documents and frameworks; (ii) The historical and ethnographic study of systematised modes of statecraft; and (iii) The intellectual genealogy and writings of non-western constitutional thinkers.
The Project welcomes applicants focusing either singly or comparatively on non-Western regions and traditions, including the Middle East and Muslim-Majority Societies, Latin America, Africa and Asia.
The studentships are open to all nationalities and will cover home/EU or Overseas fees.

Fourth Gulf Exchange, UAE and Qatar, 20-29 January 2013 Project Encounter (www.ProjectEncounter.org) is a non-profit initiative based in the UAE that promotes constructive engagement between the Middle East and the West, and serves as a stage for on-the-ground encounter. Project Encounter is pleased to announce that the application process is now open for the Fourth Gulf Exchange, the flagship program for Project Encounter.
The Gulf Exchange is a visit program for young influence-makers and future leaders from North America and Europe, to the UAE, Qatar and the Gulf, with an integrated itinerary to deepen understanding of the political, economic, and social dimensions of the Middle East.
The 10-day program will involve a high-level itinerary in the UAE and Qatar, consisting of closed-door meetings with leading regional figures and a bespoke cultural-social program.
The application process is open specifically to current or recent graduate students, and young professionals, who show exceptional capability and professional promise. In rare cases, undergraduate students may be considered.
The deadline is 7 December 2012.. Students will be expected to pay for airfare and a subsidized rate for accommodation. There is no additional program fee for the Gulf Exchange.
