/ ONLINE EVENTS
1.
ONLINE Webinar: "Germany and Israel: Whitewashing
and State Building", Middle East Institute, SOAS, University of London, 1
December 2020, 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm GMT
Daniel Marwecki (Hong Kong University) deconstructs
the myths surrounding the odd alliance between Israel and post-war democratic
Germany. Thorough archival research shows how German policymakers often had
disingenuous, cynical or even partly antisemitic motivations, seeking to whitewash
their Nazi past by supporting the new Israeli state.

ONLINE Discussion on New Book: "City of Black
Gold: Oil, Ethnicity, and the Making of Modern Kirkuk", Middle East
Studies Center, Portland State University, 1 December 2020, 3:00 pm PST
The author, Arbella Bet-Shlimon (University of
Washington), reconstructs the twentieth-century history of Kirkuk to question
the assumptions about the past underpinning today's ethnic divisions. This book
shows how contentious politics in disputed areas are not primordial traits of
those regions, but are a modern phenomenon tightly bound to the society and
economics of urban life.

ONLINE Webinar: "Mythmaking in Saudi Arabia"
with Rosie Bsheer and Robert Vitalis, Brandeis University, 2 December 2020,
12:00 pm EST
This panel will analyze the politics of how history is produced. Bsheer
will explore the increasing secularization of the Saudi state since 1991 and
how this official history-making project is reflected in documents, buildings,
and urban spaces in Riyadh and Mecca. Vitalis will question whether "oil
for security" really defines the U.S.-Saudi relationship and will unpack
why fears of oil scarcity and conflict remain so widely held.

ONLINE Panel with Middle East Experts on "Digital
Forays: Rewind, Repeat, Rehash: History, Materiality and ‘Digital
Colonialism’", Kevorkian Center, 3 December 2020, 12:30 pm EST
The Middle East is continually framed as a space where
archeological/heritage sites are not preserved. All the while the past is being
reconstructed, mediated, and circulated by new tools, models, visualizations -
and digitized by what often amounts to new practices firmly grounded in the
same shadows: Orientalist tropes and (neo)colonalist methods. This panel will
open up a space to think critically about the digital tools and approaches of
heritage making in the region.
