The successful candidate is expected to carry out original research leading to a doctoral thesis in the field of early modern Arabic philology and the intellectual and literary history of the post-classical period. The research topic may treat any of the fields of the post-classical period (linguistic sciences, logic, literature, rhetoric, exegesis, hadith criticism, usul al-fiqh, kalam, and sufi literature). Applicants must have a university degree in Arabic and Islamic studies or a related field and excellent reading skills in Arabic (and Ottoman Turkish and/or Persian, if required for research), and advanced proficiency in English.
