4.    Panel on "Towards New Social Contracts in MENA Countries? Prospects for Economic and Social Policy Reform, better Governance and National Dialogues" at the 26th Annual Congress of the German Middle East Studies Association (DAVO), Hamburg, 3-5 October 2019

The panels will analyze the question what types of social contracts have emerged after the Arab uprisings 2011 and what do these imply for the coming years. The first part of the panel will deal with MENA countries that sustained their statehood (Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt, Algeria, Jordan, Saudi Arabia), the second will deal with MENA countries that have descended into civil wars (Yemen, Libya, Syria).

The conference will feature discussions along the entire spectrum of transnational Islamism, from legalistic Islamism all the way to violent Jihadism. Media are focusing on radicalized and terror-prone Muslims, suppressed Muslim women, urban deprivation, ghettoization, ethnic minorities, and especially Muslims, as a recurrent folk devil in European imaginaries. The conference encourages the explorations of ethnic minority practices and dynamics surrounding diverse forms of issues deemed social problems.

The main purpose of this session is to highlight the modalities of women’s labor market participation in the maritime sector – and in its broad-based industries and services – in the Mediterranean port/emporium cities in modern times. 22.  Humanities Multi-Year Research Fellowships for the Study of the Arab World, New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD)

While open to scholars working in all areas of the Humanities, the program aims in particular to build a center of outstanding research capacity in areas of the Humanities that are relevant for the study of the Arabic world. Eligible candidates for the senior fellowships have an outstanding scholarly accomplishment. Mid-career scholars with strong publication records and exceptional scholarly promise may be considered in this category. Eligible candidates for the research fellowships, which are intended especially for young scholars who wish to turn their doctoral dissertations into book manuscripts publishable with major academic presses, have received their PhD within the previous five years and have a strong record of scholarly accomplishment.

Historical change, cultural diversity and political change in the Middle East are among the central subjects of the binational Master Program (MESH) that is currently carried out by the University of Erfurt, Germany and Université Saint-Joseph, Beirut. MESH is especially suited for graduates of Arab and Islamic Studies, as well as of History, Sociology, Anthropology, Ethnology and Political Sciences.

4.    Panel on "Towards New Social Contracts in MENA Countries? Prospects for Economic and Social Policy Reform, better Governance and National Dialogues" at the 26th Annual Congress of the German Middle East Studies Association (DAVO), Hamburg, 3-5 October 2019

The panels will analyze the question what types of social contracts have emerged after the Arab uprisings 2011 and what do these imply for the coming years. The first part of the panel will deal with MENA countries that sustained their statehood (Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt, Algeria, Jordan, Saudi Arabia), the second will deal with MENA countries that have descended into civil wars (Yemen, Libya, Syria).

24.  German-Lebanese Master Program on "Middle Easter Sociology/Anthropology and History" with Academic Double Degree and Semester Abroad in Lebanon Funded by the DAAD

Historical change, cultural diversity and political change in the Middle East are among the central subjects of the binational Master Program (MESH) that is currently carried out by the University of Erfurt, Germany and Université Saint-Joseph, Beirut. MESH is especially suited for graduates of Arab and Islamic Studies, as well as of History, Sociology, Anthropology, Ethnology and Political Sciences.
