Arab Region, Orient Institut Beirut, 4-8 October 2012

The Congress aims to explore arenas and manifestations of cultural change effective
in the eventful and disruptive outbursts of the Arab spring. It addresses the
manners and means of articulation and self-imaging, the medial catalysts of change,
the framing that encourages both mobilization and individual action towards change,
the tools and inspirations of nonviolent resistance. The metaphor of inversion
relates to both the moment when established orders were toppled, and the momentum
carrying cultural change in the region. Over the five days of the congress, artists,
activists and academics engage in debate and exchange.

The conference is jointly organized by the Eurel network of sociologists and legal
scholars of religion, and CRESC (Center for Research on Socio-Cultural Change).

The empirical and quantitative study of religious geography is a new subject with
much opportunity with the continual development of technical and conceptual tools.
Following the ‘spatial turn’, we have much to learn about the spatial mechanisms of
religious change. Although significant progress has been made in the wider field of
religious geography, there is considerable scope for further research into the
spatial analysis of religious data using formal methods: a new and promising field.

The Conference seeks to explore the full range of manuscript production that occurred from the thirteenth to sixteenth centuries CE: from books produced under royal patronage, such as the Mamluk and Ilkhanid Qur’an manuscripts that are almost unmatched for splendour, opulence, and size in the history of the Islamic arts of the book, to simpler, less lavish manuscripts that are no less essential to increasing our understanding of Islamic codicology and palaeography.
