Περίληψη

 Ἡ συστηματικὴ σπουδὴ τῶν μαθηματικῶν ἐπιστημῶν,
τῆς μαθηματικῆς τετρακτύος, δηλαδὴ τῆς

  • ἀριθμητικῆς, 
  • μουσικῆς, 
  • γεωμετρίας καὶ 
  • ἀστρονομίας, 

ἀνάγεται στὴν ὕστερη ἀρχαιότητα.
Τότε, καὶ κατὰ τὸ πλεῖστον στὴν Ἀλεξάνδρεια,
μεγάλοι μαθηματικοὶ ἀνέδειξαν τοὺς τέσσερεις αὐτοὺς κλάδους
συνθέτοντας διδακτικὰ ἐγχειρίδια, τὰ ὁποῖα εἶχαν εὐρεία χρήση καθόλη τὴν Βυζαντινὴ περίοδο στὰ σχολεῖα τῆς ἐγκυκλίου παιδείας.
Ἐπώνυμοι βυζαντινοὶ διδάσκαλοι, ἰδιαίτερα σὲ περιόδους ἀκμῆς τῆς παιδείας, ἔγραψαν σχόλια σὲ ἕνα ἢ περισσότερα ἀπὸ τὰ τέσσερα αὐτὰ μαθήματα.
Μετὰ τὴν Δ´ Σταυροφορία καὶ τὴν ἅλωση τῆς Κωνσταντινουπόλεως ἀπὸ τοὺς Λατίνους τὸ 1204,
ἡ πολιτικὴ καὶ πολιτισμικὴ συνέχεια τῆς αὐτοκρατορίας ἐτέθη σὲ ὕψιστο κίνδυνο.
 Ἡ συνέχεια στὴν παιδεία διεσώθη στὴν ἐξόριστη αὐτοκρατορία τῆς Νίκαιας.
Ὅταν, λοιπόν, ἀπεκατεστάθη ἡ αὐτοκρατορία στὴν παλαίφατη πρωτεύουσά της, τὸ 1261,
ἔγιναν συντονισμένες προσπάθειες νὰ ἀνακτήσει τὴν παλαιά αἴγλη στὸν χῶρο τῆς παιδείας.
Σχολεῖα ἀνασυστήθηκαν, χειρόγραφα ἀναζητήθηκαν παντοῦ καὶ ἀντιγράφηκαν καὶ σχολιάσθηκαν ἀπὸ μία πλειάδα φωτισμένων διδασκάλων.
Οἱ μαθηματικὲς ἐπιστῆμες καλλιεργήθηκαν ἐκ νέου ἀπὸ λογίους, ὅπως ὁ Μάξιμος Πλανούδης, ὁ Γεώργιος Παχυμέρης καὶ ὁ Θεόδωρος Μετοχίτης, οἱ ὁποῖοι μᾶς ἄφησαν σχόλια στοὺς ἀρχαίους μαθηματικούς, συνέθεσαν νέα διδακτικὰ ἐγχειρίδια, ἀλλὰ καὶ αὐτοτελεῖς μελέτες ἐμβάθυνσης στὴν ἀριθμητική, τὴν ἁρμονική, τὴν γεωμετρία, ἀλλὰ καὶ τὴν ἀστρονομία. Ἡ τελευταία θὰ ἀναδειχθεῖ κατεξοχὴν στοὺς Παλαιολόγειους χρόνους καὶ σὲ αὐτὸ συντέλεσαν καὶ μεταφράσεις ἀπὸ τὰ Περσικὰ ἀστρονομικῶν καὶ ἀστρολογικῶν κειμένων.
 Τὴν σπουδὴ τοῦ Quadrivium θὰ ἐπιχειρήσουμε νὰ ἀποτυπώσουμε στὴν ὁμιλία μας, μέσα ἀπὸ τὶς γραπτὲς πηγὲς καὶ μάλιστα τὰ σωζόμενα χειρόγραφα τῶν ἰδίων τῶν λογίων.

La guerre en Syrie et en Irak, qui dure maintenant depuis cinq ans, voit saillir du chaos des histoires particulières qui, dans la tourmente, se voient rapidement remplacées par d’autres : la chute de Mossoul, la bataille de Kobâne, l’intervention russe, la reprise de Palmyre sont autant d’événements qui se succèdent à une vitesse impressionnante et parmi lesquels faire le tri est ardu. Pics émotionnels jaillissant du torrent d’informations provenant « du front », effectuer un retour sur ces événements marquant peut s’avérer salutaire. Nous avons donc choisi de revenir ici sur un épisode marquant d’août 2014, moment où les Yézidis des monts Sinjar s’étaient vu massacrés et poursuivis par l’Organisation Etat islamique, alors en pleine expansion. Analyser en quoi leur parcours cristallise un ensemble d’enjeux récurrents en ce qui concerne la « gestion plurielle » des minorités au sein du Moyen-Orient permet de mieux appréhender ce que l’on pourrait appeler la « nouvelle question d’Orient » formulée par les acteurs de la situation irako-syrienne.

Les Yézidis

A partir des années 1880, l’Ottoman Abdül Hamid II, faisant son possible pour sauver un Empire bientôt condamné, compose son projet panislamiste : l’idée est de reconstruire la légitimité de la Sublime Porte en sacralisant une centralité turque en Anatolie protégée par un glacis musulman à sa périphérie. Cette idéologie s’est accompagnée d’une logique d’épuration ethnique et religieuse qui aboutit, en 1892, à la meurtrière expédition menée par le commandant des forces de pacification Ferik Ömer Vehbi Pacha à l’encontre des fidèles du Malek Taous (1). Considérés depuis le XIe siècle comme des adorateurs de Satan, les Yézidis sont un groupe ethnique et religieux dont les principes sont inspirés des trois grandes religions monothéistes. Il s’agit d’un « syncrétisme à forte inspiration zoroastrienne » (2) selon l’auteur spécialiste des minorités anatoliennes Bahar Kimyongür, l’une des formes les plus anciennes de religiosité au monde, aussi.
C’est au pied du Sinjar qu’une partie de la population yézidie, notamment composée de groupes assimilés d’un point de vue ethnolinguistique aux Kurdes (3), est implantée. Cette région est une zone montagneuse au Nord de l’Irak, située à 50 kilomètres des frontières syrienne et turque. Elle est considérée comme sacrée par la population – composée aussi de nombreux représentants des communautés chrétiennes et musulmanes – : ce serait sur ces montagnes que l’arche de Noé se serait échoué à la fin du déluge, c’est aussi là que sont bâtis les lieux sacrés des Yézidis. On estime à 700 000 le nombre de Yézidis dans le monde, et ceux qui habitent le Sinjar y représentent entre un quart et un tiers du total, soit 130 à 200 000 individus. Ils sont par ailleurs régulièrement au cœur de violences religieuses depuis la fin de l’intervention américaine de 2003 (4), et, plus largement, comme le rappelle l’historien turc Birgül Açıkyıldız « depuis le XIIe siècle, (ils) sont victimes de persécutions par les Arabes sunnites (…) et ont aussi été quasiment totalement éliminés du territoire turc depuis la fin de la période ottomane (5) ».

Des massacres à l’exil d’août 2014

Au long du dramatique été 2014 qu’a connu le Moyen-Orient et plus particulièrement l’Irak, le sort des Yézidis, communauté oubliée, a refait surface aux yeux du monde. Au cours de cette période, la communauté internationale a assisté avec stupéfaction et conjointement à la chute d’une armée irakienne alors bien formée et réputée solide (6) – et avec elle, au naufrage de l’Etat irakien – et à la montée en puissance d’un groupe jusqu’ici largement méconnu, l’Organisation de l’Etat islamique (7). Et des images d’une grande force symbolique ont fait le tour des journaux du monde : des populations, hagardes, nombreuses, fuyant à pied les combats, traversant le désert ; des femmes portant enfants, baluchons de fortune, livrées à elles-mêmes, et mourant aussi, de soif et de faim, sur les monts Sinjar.
Considérés par l’OEI comme païens (8), « adorateurs de Satan », l’élimination des Yézidis fait partie pour les militants de Daesh d’une stratégie visant à l’établissement d’un califat islamique religieusement uni par la version du sunnisme tel que défendue par Abou-Bakr Al-Baghdadi, le leader du mouvement. L’histoire semble alors se répéter pour les Yézidis, à nouveau victimes d’un projet « panislamique » et, au même titre que la « question d’Orient » (9) motivait les agissements de l’Empire ottoman, la destinée répétitive des Yézidis peut être pensée dans le cadre d’une nouvelle question d’Orient, où l’apparition d’un nouvel acteur non-étatique et exclusif répond en miroir à la disparition, au début du siècle dernier, d’un acteur plurinational et inclusif.
Le 2 août, les combattants de l’OEI prennent Sinjar, jetant des centaines de milliers de personnes sur les routes, 147 000 d’entre elles rejoignant les camps de réfugiés du Kurdistan autonome en seulement trois jours (10). Des situations de grande violence se multiplient : les hommes yézidis sont massacrés systématiquement, 5 000 femmes et filles se font violer avant d’être internées dans les prisons de Mossoul tenues par les soldats de l’OEI, puis vendues sur des marchés comme esclaves sexuelles (11) ; certaines d’entre-elles sont converties à l’islam et mariées de force à des combattants de Daesh. L’élimination des hommes, l’assimilation forcée des femmes et la stratégie du « génocide par le ventre » sont autant d’éléments qui ont alarmés la communauté internationale, et la dramatique situation des milliers de familles ayant fui vers les monts Sinjar a mis en œuvre les acteurs régionaux et internationaux opposés à l’OEI.

Les missions de secours

Dès le 6 août, nombreux sont les appels à l’aide lancés à l’international : une partie des Yézidis a fui vers les monts Sinjar, relief culminant à 4 :400 mètres d’altitude. Près de 5 000 familles se retrouvent acculées sur ces hauteurs arides, et les 6 et 7 août 40 enfants meurent de faim et de soif. Le 8 août, les Etats-Unis et l’Irak mettent en place un pont aérien et larguent sur la zone des vivres, mais les besoins sont importants et les quantités insuffisantes. Le gouvernement irakien affrète des hélicoptères dont la coordination est assurée par la parlementaire yézidie Vian Dikhil (12). Les conditions sont difficiles, l’air est trop peu dense pour que les hélicoptères aient suffisamment de portance et un appareil se crashe après une mission de secours.
Face à ce qui apparaît comme une nouvelle faillite de l’Etat irakien, non en mesure de protéger ses populations et de les aider dans la configuration présente, une « Union sacrée » se forme (13) : les Kurdes de Syrie, du Yekîneyên Parastina Gel (YPG) (14) s’associent aux Kurdes du Partiya Karkerên Kurdistan (PKK) (15), qui ajoutent à la force de frappe des premiers une dimension stratégique et une mobilité inégalée, propre aux mouvements de guérilla. Le 15 août, les monts Sinjar sont sécurisés par les milices kurdes, et le soir-même, seules quelques centaines de famille sont encore coincées dans les montagnes.
On assiste ainsi à l’émergence d’acteurs non-étatiques, qui interviennent pour sauver une population. Comme la suite des événements en Irak et en Syrie le montrera, avec par exemple le siège de Kobanê au nord de la Syrie, cette configuration tend à se normaliser, les Etats se positionnant en soutien de mouvements de guérilla, acteurs capables de s’adapter aux nouveaux défis militaires de l’OEI.

L’aide des Kurdes et des Arméniens

Le 4 septembre, environ 30 000 Yézidis ayant fuit les régions du Sinjar traversent la frontière turque. A partir du 5 septembre, ces populations, évacuées par le PKK, sont prises en charge par les Kurdes de Turquie. Cette dernière ferme sa frontière le jour-même (16), avec pour contrepartie officielle des livraisons de vivres du côté irakien, là où près de 40 000 Yézidis attendent à ce moment-là leur évacuation vers la Turquie, selon le député du Halk Demokratik Partisi (17) (HDP) Faysal Sarıyıldız, de Cızre (18) : les Yézidis kurdophones seraient l’objet d’une discrimination inique, face aux réfugiés syriens musulmans accueillis alors en grand nombre et sans contrôle depuis le début de la guerre civile en Syrie, tout en fermant les yeux sur l’afflux constant de nouvelles recrues pour l’OEI qui transitent sur le territoire turc. L’avocate et défenseuse des droits des minorités Sabri Yirimbeşoğlu estime quant à elle que la Turquie a « collaboré » avec l’OEI, et qu’il est alors relativement dangereux pour les Yézidis de demeurer sur un territoire aux sympathies à peine dissimulées pour l’Etat islamique et à la méfiance déclarée contre tout élément affilié de près ou de loin aux Kurdes (19).
L’Arménie quant à elle, rivale historique de la République anatolienne, a annoncé lors d’un concert caritatif en faveur des réfugiés yézidis (au cours duquel la chanteuse arménienne Suse Petrossian a déclaré "chers Yézidis, votre douleur est la nôtre. Nous savons ce que vous ressentez") un ensemble de mesures pour venir en aide à cette minorité, parmi lesquels le déblocage d’une somme d’argent destinée à l’aide humanitaire et l’ouverture des frontières aux réfugiés au nom de la « fraternité séculaire » qui anime Arméniens et Yézidis (20). Ces mesures symboliques, auxquelles s’ajoute la demande faite par les Yézidis d’avoir une représentation aux Nations unies via la délégation arménienne, est partie d’une stratégie pour les autorités arméniennes de faire entrer en résonnance le destin yézidi et le passé arménien – deux peuples jetés sur les routes, abandonnés dans les déserts, menacés de disparaître – pour mieux s’opposer à la Turquie, considérée dans les deux cas comme responsable des sorts de ces deux peuples à un siècle d’intervalle (21).
Ainsi, la situation vécue par les Yézidis peut-elle être lue au regard des enjeux propres à la question d’Orient, tel qu’ils furent posés dès la fin du XVIIIe siècle : gestion des minorités, décomposition et recomposition des puissances, rivalités d’hégémonie sur la région Moyen-Orient, apparition de nouveaux acteurs et formations inédites… Il peut sembler pertinent, aujourd’hui, et à la lumière de la destinée de ce peuple oublié de l’histoire, de formuler une « nouvelle question d’Orient ».

Un an et demi après

Un an et demi après ces événements tragiques, les populations yézidies des monts Sinjar ont retrouvé leurs demeures. Partagées entre désarroi et colère, elles ressentent un fort sentiment d’abandon (22) et sont désormais animées qu’une volonté de revanche et de justice forte, qui se traduit par le recours à une forme de violence : depuis décembre 2015, moment auquel les Yézidis ont pu quitter les camps de réfugiés et retrouver leurs terres, une répression contre les musulmans de Sinjar s’est mise en place. Exécutions sommaires sur seul soupçon de collaboration avec l’Etat islamique, méfiance et haine du voisin sont autant de manifestation de la profonde fracture que l’OEI a pratiqué dans les sociétés locales (23).

“Ερευνώντας το οθωμανικό παρελθόν: Μια ελληνική συμβολή”
Η ερευνητική δραστηριότητα μιας τριακονταετίας για τη μελέτη της ιστορίας της Οθωμανικής Αυτοκρατορίας και των Ελλήνων μέσα σε αυτό το ιστορικό πλαίσιο. Βασικό άξονα της εκδήλωσης θα αποτελέσει η παρουσίαση των ιστοριογραφικών ζητημάτων του οθωμανικού παρελθόντος που έχουν αναδείξει οι ξενόγλωσσοι τόμοι που έχουν προκύψει από τη σειρά οθωμανολογικών συμποσίων «Αλκυονίδες Ημέρες στην Κρήτη» και έχουν δημοσιευθεί από τις Πανεπιστημιακές Εκδόσεις Κρήτης.
