(Tel Aviv University), Heidelberg Center for Transcultural Studies, 2 November 2021, 6:00 pm

Kurdish-Jewish-Israeli relations are not only shaped by a myriad of ‘positive’ and ‘negative’ myths, they have
also been influenced historically by the asymmetry of relations between a state actor (Israel) and a non-state
ethno-national group (the Kurds). Despite political differences, both groups represent minorities within the
Middle East whose neighbours have delegitimized their right to national self-determination.

After the Uprisings” by Caroline Rooney (University of Kent), London Middle East Institute,
SOAS,16 November 2021, 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm GMT
The book engages affect theory to show how a poetics of disappointment, despair and distrust, to dignity,
solidarity and reconfigured senses of the sacred, offered a way for the left to reclaim ethical and progressive
'radical' values co-opted by political leaders and extremists in the Middle East. In so doing, the book offers
an original conceptual framework for differentiating 'radicalization' from the creative radicalism of the Arab
avant-garde.
