A growing number of mosque attacks as well as weekly anti-Muslim demonstrations in
Dresden and other German cities are signs of rising anti-Muslim attitudes within
large parts of the German population. This conference about anti-Muslim racism will
analyze and counter these detrimental developments.

4. Symposium: “Sacred World: The Changing Meanings in Textual Cultures of Islamic
Africa”, Northwestern University, Evanston, IL, 21-22 April 2016
 
This meeting seeks to approach the meaning(s) of textual cultures in Muslim
societies in Africa and the changes that have taken place during the last two
centuries. A special evening reception is planned to honor Professor John O.
Hunwick, in whose memory the conference is dedicated. Some financial support may be

5. Conference: “Shia Minorities in the Contemporary World: Migration,
Transnationalism and Multilocality”, University of Chester, UK, 20-21 May 2016
 
The conference will bring together researchers working on Shia minorities outside of
the so-called “Muslim heartland”. The conference will focus on Shia minorities in
Europe, North and South America, Sub-Saharan Africa, Australia, the Pacific Rim and
East Asia that emerged out of migration from the Middle East and South Asia in the
20th and 21st centuries, in particular.

8. BRISMES Annual Conference 2016: "Networks: Connecting the Middle East through
Time, Space and Cyberspace", University of Wales Trinity St David, Lampeter Campus,
13 – 15 July 2016

The Conference seeks to place networks at the centre of discussion, encouraging
proposals for papers and panels that take up this theme in innovative ways. The
conference organisers encourage submissions that highlight the connections between
the Middle East and other areas of the globe, as well as ties within the region, be
they between individual countries or between sub-regions. In addition, we warmly
encourage proposals on any topic related to Middle Eastern Studies, regardless of
its fit with the overall theme.  Our aim is to encourage dialogue between scholars
studying the Middle East and North Africa from all disciplines.

The MPhil studentship for starting graduate study in October 2016 is available for
those studying Islamic Studies in the Faculty of Divinity on the MPhil in Theology

approaches to the notion of human dignity in the context of Qurʾānic anthropology"
 
The volume focuses on the question of how Islamic anthropology can contribute to
cultivation and perfection of the individual self as well as to social
'humanisation'. Its specific aim is to bring together contemporary Muslim and
non-Muslim approaches to (and readings of) human dignity, with reference to the
Islamic tradition in general and the anthropology of the Qurʾān in particular.
