This workshop aims at exploring the relation between media and cultural production
in the Arab world across the centuries (oral/written, manuscript/print, digital
technologies). By looking at how media have impacted form and content, actors and
audiences, we aim to identify not only transitions and ruptures but also
continuities and complementarity of ʻnewʼ and ʻoldʼ media.

4. Conference "Egyptian Media and Journalism between Change and Continuity", Freie
Universitaet Berlin, 12-14 November 2015  

More than 20 scholars and media practitioners from Egypt, Germany and the UK discuss
the development of journalism in Egypt. Issues include the self-regulation of
journalists, professionalism, freedom of speech, the evolution of the media
landscape, and the political economy of Egypt's media.

5. 13th Annual Duke-UNC Islamic Studies Graduate Student Workshop on “Global Muslim
Modernities and the Post-Secular”, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, 27-28
February 2016  
 
The concepts of “modernity” and “secularism” have received renewed attention within
academic literature on Muslim societies and Islamic studies. This year’s conference
aspires to create a forum for those exploring innovative engagements with this
material from an interdisciplinary perspective drawing on critical theory and global
approaches. Ph.D. students are especially encouraged to apply.
