The symposium hopes to contribute to the study of intellectual exchange since the
early modern period across the Mediterranean, and particularly between the Arab
Mamluk polities, the early Ottoman Empire and the Italian Renaissance princedoms.

The conference aims at attracting scholars at all career levels, including
post-graduate students, from a broad range of disciplines. Original research based
on empirical data and/or new theoretical approaches are encouraged. Contributions by

Commenting in Islam?”, Dominican Institute for Oriental Studies, Cairo, 14-16
January 2016
 
The extent of the corpus of post-classical commentaries in Islam requires further
research. Our conference intends to contribute to this research. We expect to add
new fields and provide convincing examples which clarify issues and refine our
understanding of the challenges faced by the transmission and interpretation of the
Islamic sciences.

Why have so many political players opted for the use of the Islamic idiom in
politics? The aim of this volume is to provide a long-term historical perspective on
the successive phases of the latter's updating, so as to highlight the successive
modes of elaboration and reproduction of the identity alchemy at work in the choice
of the Islamic idiom.
