This workshop aims to situate the nineteenth-century “Nahda” (the Arab revival, enlightenment or renaissance) in its regional and global context. We hope to draw on links and parallels with the Ottoman Tanzimat, the Greek and Balkan Enlightenments, the Armenian Renaissance, and comparable movements further afield, to place the Nahda in its global context. The workshop will bring together scholars from intellectual history, global history, literary theory, and comparative literature, art history.

13. International Conference and Graduate Student Workshop on "Islam in Russia", Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies at Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, 15-16 October 2015
This conference will focus on what it means to be a Muslim in Russia today and how these meanings are reflected in Russian political life. Conference participants will examine the variety of Muslim identities in modern Russia and also consider the evolving role of Muslims in Russian history. In addition to the conference, a smaller graduate student workshop will be held immediately prior to the conference.
