2) International Workshop: “Dawla Madaniyya: A Future for the Civil State in the

The term dawla madaniyya (civil state) was one of the most often heard during the so
called ‘Arab Spring’ uprisings across the Arab world and became a ‘floating
signifier’ invested with multiple notions linked to the relationship between the
governing and the governed, to citizenship, justice, security, the role of religion
in state, etc.

4) Conference: “Anti-Jewish and Anti-Muslim Racisms and the Question of
Palestine/Israel”, SOAS, University of London, 9 February 2015
This conference seeks to examine how the histories of Zionist settlement,
anti-colonial and nation-building struggles and 20th century warfare in the Middle
East region are being transformed in the current historical conjuncture. Of
particular importance in this context will be ideological and political alliances
that have emerged locally, regionally and globally around notions such as the ‘New
Antisemitism’, and ‘Islamophobia’ and how these relate to racialised discourses
against Jews and Muslims.

We seek papers exploring the politics of revolution and repression in the
contemporary Arab World. Topics include: - popular pressure for political change -

Global History calls attention to the importance of trans-regional and global

9) Interdisciplinary Workshop: “A Sea that Links and Binds: Cooperation, Coercion
and Compulsion across the Red Sea from the Eighteenth Century to the Present”
Papers are welcome on the entire greater Red Sea region, defined as encompassing
modern day states of Somalia, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Egypt, Israel, Jordan,
Saudi Arabia and Yemen. Papers will be drawn from the fields of History,
Anthropology, Cultural Studies, Sociology, Political Science etc. focusing on Port
cultures; Social dynamics on board ships; Migrations, forced and otherwise, and
the integration of migrant communities in their new homes; Relationships between
ruling elites and their subject populations; The spread of religious beliefs and
spiritual practices, etc.

11) Panel: “Exploring Liberation through the Lens of Islamic Actors in Turkey” for
Annual Congress of BRISMES ((British Society for Middle Eastern Studies), London,

Papers are invited that explore the view of Turkish Islamic socio-political actors –
political parties, Muslim intellectuals and organisations, social and religious
movements – on liberation, by looking at both their proximities and differences with
Western conceptions. We welcome studies that focus on the reaction of Islamic actors
to the Arab Spring and the 2013 Gezi Park protests.

during the Mamluk Era (1250-1517)".

15) Workshop: „Transnational Knowledge Relations and Researcher Mobility for
Building Knowledge-Based Societies and Economies in the Gulf”, Gulf Research
Meeting, University of Cambridge, 24-27 August 2015
This workshop will explore the intellectual relations and researcher mobility
between the Gulf and the outside world with a specific focus on Gulf universities
and other relevant actors such as think tanks, professional organizations,
government organizations, and business communities. And, importantly, we are also
interested in knowledge networks that connect the Gulf to non-Western organizations,
both public and private, in Asia and beyond. An edited book based on the individual
papers will be published.

17) Panel: "Tourism History in the Middle East and North Africa" for Annual Meeting
of MESA, Denver, Colorado, 21-24 November 2015
We are interested in papers that address organized and individual forms of leisure
travel either to the region, within the region, or from the region. We seek papers
that address any historical era up to the present and develop interdisciplinary
approaches and/or use tourism as a lens to explore broader social, culture,
economic, or political issues in the region. The co-organizers will seek to publish
the papers as special issue of the Journal of Tourism History.

The Program is conducted in the framework of the „Stability Initiative North Africa
and Near East” of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and
Development (BMZ). During the three year program a comprehensive survey on the
situation of youths in the MENA region will be conducted, activities will be
organized to widely discuss the results. The findings will be used for intensive
policy advice and debate.

Middle East, St Antony’s College, University of Oxford
Fixed term post for 5 years. Salary: University Lecturer Grade 36S (£44,620 -

Eastern Studies, act as a supervisor or co-supervisor for postgraduate theses, serve

24) Project SHINE: Volunteers to Teach English in Palestinian Refugee Camps in
Lebanon this Summer
LEAP recruits volunteers to teach English and extracurricular activities, while
living and working in the refugee camps of Lebanon. In turn, our volunteers learn
about the Palestinian refugee reality in general, but particularly in Lebanon where
the situation for Palestinian refugees is particularly dire, especially due to the
Syrian refugee crisis.
