occasion of the seventieth birthday of the Arabist and Qur’an scholar
Angelika
Neuwirth, colleagues, companions and students will speak of topics from
Arabic,
Islamic and Jewish Studies, Theology, Literary and Cultural Studies and
Philology:
Stefan Wild (Bonn), Nadia Al-Bagdadi (CEU, Budapest), Ridwan Al-Sayyid
(Lebanese
University, Beirut), Thomas Bauer (Münster), Daniel Boyarin (UC Berkeley),
Beatrice
Gruendler (Yale), Ken Seigneurie (Simon Fraser University), Nicolai Sinai
(Oxford),
Klaus von Stosch (Paderborn) und Martin Treml (ZfL) The evening lecture
will be
given by Susannah Heschel on “Islam and German-Jewish Self-Understanding”.
The
conference is organized by two
programs at the Forum Transregionale Studien,
namely
Europe in the Middle East – The Middle East in Europe (EUME) and
Zukunftsphilologie.

"New EU Research Program Horizon 2020", Cairo, 20 January 2014
The EU
is preparing for the launch of "Horizon 2020", the largest
collaborative
transnational
research programme in the world with an expected overall budget of €79
billion
from 2014 to 2020. Horizon 2020 offers many opportunities for addressing
EuroMed
Common Challenges through R&I international cooperation. The conference
aims to
discuss the future of international cooperation in Research and Innovation
in the
EuroMed region under Horizon 2020. International cooperation, especially with
its
neighbouring countries and the Mediterranean region, is a key priority of EU
research
and innovation funding.

Symposium “Minorities in the Pre-Modern Mediterranean” and Workshop on
“Minorities”,
San Francisco State University, 7-8 March 2014
On 7
March, three round-table sessions, "Opportunity,” “Assimilation and
Exchange,”
and
“Vulnerability" will be held, each for discussing the status and
circumstances
of
minorities. Minorities may include religious minorities, for example, Jews
and
Christians
living in Muslim lands, Muslims and Jews in Christian lands, but also
relations
of heterodox groups within these three broad religious categories. The
deadline
for submission is 1 January 2014
The
Workshop on “Minorities" on 8 March
will consist of discussion of three
pre-circulated
papers and a keynote presentation by our featured scholar, Stephen
Humphreys,
"Adapting to the Infidel: the Christian Communities of Syria in the
Early
Islamic
Period.”, The deadline for workshop proposals is 15 January 2014.

The
conference is organized by the graduate students of the Department of Culture
Studies
and Oriental Languages at the University of Oslo. In this conference, we
would
like to examine implications of the ‘spatial turn’ for the humanities. In
particular,
we look at the possible impact of new considerations of space on the
disciplines
represented at our institute: Asian studies, Middle Eastern studies,
cultural
studies, and the study of religion(s). Those who wish to participate in the
conference
and present a paper are requested to submit an abstract (max.
500

are invited on all subjects related to the Mediterranean region and

cultures around the world from all historical periods.Over 150
scholarly
papers will be delivered before an international audience of scholars,

and experts in a wide range of fields. The official languages of the
Congress
are English and Spanish.
The
deadline for first consideration is 1 February 2014, but we will continue to
accept
papers until the program is finalized in early April, 2014.

on in-depth empirical research, the papers in this panel examine Islamic
NGOs in
Egypt, shedding light on the different types of Islamic NGOs as well as the
differences
and similarities in their work. The case studies comprise a wide variety

Islamic NGOs. This panel pursues an interdisciplinary approach. It welcomes
contributions
from scholars of anthropology, politics, development studies,
sociology
and economics whose research is based on in-depth field research.

panel is chaired by Ferran Izquierdo (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona).
Once a
regime
falls after popular revolts, the transition process continues in the
competition
/ negotiation process between all stakeholders involved in shaping the
new
regime. Which are the decisive actors? Which resources do they control? What
type of
relationship do they have between each other? What kind of regime do they
want to
build? The political changes in these countries will depend on the balance
of
power between the various actors.

meanings deeply interconnected with the development of each of Mediterranean

imitate the evidence that have marked and conditioned the life of the

The Middle East in Europe (EUME)", Academic Year 2014/15 in Berlin
The fellowships are addressed to scholars who are interested in the methodological
perspective of dealing with regions or cultures not as closed entities or
polarities, but by looking at processes of transfer, exchange, and interaction in
the sense of entangled or shared histories and cultures.
EUME supports and builds upon the following interconnected research fields:
- Cities Compared: Urban Change in the Mediterranean and Adjacent Regions
- Islamic Discourse Contested: Middle Eastern and European Perspectives
- Perspectives on the Qur'an: Negotiating Different Views of a Shared History
- Travelling Traditions: Comparative Perspectives on Near Eastern Literatures
- Tradition and the Critique of Modernity: Secularism, Fundamentalism and Religion
from Middle Eastern Perspectives
The fellowships are intended primarily for scholars of art history, history,
literature, philology, political philosophy, political science, religion and
sociology who want to carry out their research projects in connection with the
Berlin program. Applicants should be at the postdoctoral level and should have
obtained their doctorate within the last seven years. As a rule, the fellowships
start on 1 October 2014 and will end on 31 July 2015
