6. Conference: "The Caspian Sea in the History of Early Modern and Modern Eurasia",
Yale University, New Haven, CT, 6-8 April 2018
 
The Program in Iranian Studies welcomes submissions for a workshop to explore the
dimensions of the Caspian Sea as a geographical frame for historical study. It asks
whether the Caspian functions as a conceptual framework for various forms of
exchange in commerce, diplomacy, political culture, forces of dissent and
revolutionary movements, movements of peoples, material culture, art, and literature
as well as ecology, disease, navigation and maritime culture.

7. 2nd International Conference: "Servants' Past (in Colonial South Asia Compared
with the Ottoman Empire)", Zentrum Moderner Orient (ZMO), Berlin, 11-13 April 2018
 
The conference will also explore comparative similarities and specificities in
domestic work across diverse imperial, colonial and postcolonial settings. The
temporal range will include the early modern and modern periods (sixteenth century
to the contemporary). Travel and accommodation will be covered.

8. IX Islamic Law and Society Conference, International Society of Islamic Legal
Studies, Helsinki & Tampere, Finland, 6-9 June 2018   
 
The conference will be divided into two parts. In the first, which will take place
in Helsinki, a keynote address and an invited panel of five speakers will present on
"Islamic Law and the Relationship between Ruler and Ruled."  The second part, which
will take place in Tampere over two-and-a-half days, will consist of presentations;
preference is given to discussions based on primary text analysis or fieldwork.
