9. International Workshop: “Représentations spatiales de la péninsule Arabique”,
University of Paris, 20-22 October 2016

This workshop aims to identify and analyze the different cultural and territorial
perceptions of the Arabian Peninsula in the European and Arab societies, the
imagination processes around this space and the possible interactions between
historical accounts and the redefinition of space from the 16th to the 21st century.
Topics included are geography, history, history of art, travellers’ accounts,
scientific mission reports, iconographic heritage.

The aim of this workshop is to gather information about the networks and the
reception of Surrealism and thereby to approach its dissemination more
systematically. In addition to this structural dimension, the workshop will attempt

15. Three Research Associates Focusing on "Stories of Survival, Recovering the
Connected Histories of Eastern Christianity in the Early Modern World", Oxford
University

This is a new research project that will investigate the history of Eastern
Christianity during the 16th-18th centuries. The team will analyze a 'lost archive'
of literary, documentary, and printed sources in three continents, ten languages,
and dozens of archives to produce a new religious and social history of Eastern
Christianity in a global context. We are seeking three Research Associates with the
following specialisms: * a focus on ‘European Visions of the Christian East’ as
reflected in European-language sources (one post) * a focus on Arabic and/or Syriac
sources related to Eastern Christianity (two posts).

18. Yarshater Lectureship in Avestan and Pahlavi Languages, University of Toronto

This appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream, and
will begin on July 1, 2016 and end June 30, 2019, with the possibility of a renewal
for a further three years. The successful candidate will have an appropriate PhD by
the time of their appointment and will have teaching responsibilities at both the
undergraduate and graduate levels.

19. Teaching English in the Palestinian Refugee Camps of Lebanon this Summer

“Learning for the Empowerment and Advancement of Palestinians (LEAP)” recruits
volunteers to provide English courses and recreational activities, while living and
working in the refugee camps of Lebanon. In turn, our volunteers learn about the
Palestinian refugee reality in general, but particularly in Lebanon where the
situation for Palestinian refugees is particularly dire, especially in recent years
due to the Syrian refugee crisis.

20. Autumn School: “Reading Fatwas”, Annemarie Schimmel Kolleg, University of Bonn,
8-12 August 2016

The purpose of this Fall School is to introduce participants to the methods,
sources, and lines of inquiry in studying medieval fatwas. Fatwas are an invaluable
window on legal institutions, conflict resolution on the local level, relations of
“state and society”, and local values and ethics.

21. Articles on "Iconography" for International Peer-reviewed Open Access Journal
"Middle East - Topics and Arguments" (META)

Synchronistic studies of the combination of discrete elements in spatially and
temporally bounded areas such as these form one of the most adaptable approaches in
the field of Cultural Studies. The META issue “Iconography” aims to critically
engage with this approach and shed light on the underlying assumptions of a
“grammar” of a Language of Forms (Formensprache) and the interplay of visibility and
structure in representations produced in a given society.
