WOCMES: Extended Deadline for Call for Proposals until 15 February 2014

Do  not miss the most important global event in Middle Eastern and North African Studies in 2014!


Dear colleagues and friends,

Due to the requests of many colleagues who were late in the organization of their panels and other activities during  WOCMES-4 in Ankara, it has been decided that the deadline for papers, panels, and all other proposals will be extended until 15 February 2014.

You are kindly requested to motivate your colleagues to participate in the most important global event in Middle Eastern and North African studies in 2014. Please see the website of WOCMES at  http://www.wocmes2014.org, the attached invitation  and the invitation below which might be forwarded to your colleagues.

If you are still looking for additional paper presenters for your panel, please return this message with an announcement of up to 100 words to be forwarded to more than 5000 scholars via EURAMES Info Service. The form of your Call for Paper should follow the example below.

Fourth World Congress for Middle East Studies (WOCMES),  METU, Ankara, Turkey, 18-22 August 2014

The Turkish Social Sciences Association and the Middle East Technical University (METU) are pleased to invite you to the Fourth WOCMES. The World Congress seeks to address questions, exchange and explore information on Middle East in the broadest sense. Scholars, researchers, experts and students engaged in the study of the Middle East, North Africa and Central Asia are invited to submit their proposals for panels, papers, roundtables, posters and cultural activities for the Fourth World Congress.

The principal themes followed since the First World Congress have been retained in WOCMES 2014: Ancient Middle East; Historical Approaches; Islam in Past and Present; Christian and Biblical Studies; Urban Studies and Space; Water and the Environment; Economics of the Middle East; Politics of the Middle East; Women and Gender Studies; Normative Phenomena and Legal Research; Migration Studies; Media and Cultural Studies; Linguistics and Literature; and Nationality, Identities and Ethnicity. Panels and papers that do not fall within the boundaries of these themes are of course welcome.

Individuals who wish to attend WOCMES 2014 are expected to submit their abstracts by 15 February All submission should be done via http://www.wocmes2014.org. For additional questions related to the organization of WOCMES please contact secretariat@wocmes2014.org

Panel: "The Jordanian Popular Protest Movement (Al Hirak Al Shabi)", World Congress for Middle Eastern Studies (WOCMES), Ankara, 18-22 August 2014

While Jordan has not experienced a Spring in the same way as Egypt and Tunisia, a vibrant reform movement has nonetheless emerged over the past three years. Various groups have called into question many of the commonly held truths about Jordanian political priorities, social organization and class politics.  This panel will examine the Jordanian Popular Protest Movement.
